I will go down with this ship.
Dan Stevens will be on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Thursday, so if you all want to watch and scream at your television…
Odd timing. The Downton promo phase seems to be over and he was never given a role in that anyway. The Heiress promo phase has passed, though I’m sure they’ll plug it. Curious to see if they bring up his DA departure and if he deflects or acknowledges it.
I was just thinking. He really effed up his own promo opportunities by walking away from Downton. If he was doing S4, he would’ve been all over the late night and daytime shows with the rest of the cast on their promo tour last month, and I bet they would’ve taken advantage of him being in NY and sent him to do the rounds on some NY talk shows this month as well. The last time Americans saw him (aside from the premiere) was the proposal, and Matthew gained so much public goodwill from that. If he thought Downton was popular in the States last season, it’s only gotten much bigger since. S3 premiere figures were huge. This would’ve been such perfect timing, the perfect chance for him career-wise, to ride the huge Downton pop culture wave and break into the American conscious. Instead, he’s stuck in this awkward in-between place where he can’t really promote Downton in the US without people calling him two-faced, but he can’t ignore it either cuz Matthew hasn’t died in the US yet…
I wonder if he saw that awesome Breaking Abbey parody on Colbert that RJC, Hugh B, and Jim Carter did and cried himself to sleep. Yeah, dude missed out, continues to miss out big time. This time next year, you won’t see American comedians and celebs live-tweeting Dan about Downton anymore. I’ll venture to say you’ll hardly see *any* Americans tweeting Dan anymore.
I just don’t get it. Not too long ago, he was enthusiastically tweeting about all the Downton spoofs and parodies. Does he not recognize a veritable phenomenon when he sees it? Does he think himself that highbrow? When’s the next time in his career that he thinks he’ll be working alongside Maggie Smith and Shirley Maclaine? I will strive to move on eventually, but I don’t think I will ever stop wondering why he thought leaving was a good career move. Big mistake. HUGE.
UGH. I wish I could shut up about this, but as long as Dan Stevens continues to reveal the extent of his unraveling via twitter profile changes (what are we, FIVE?), I cannot let this go. Why is he doing this? Hate tweets aren’t fun, but if he doesn’t understand or expect backlash, he is dumber than the child he’s been acting like lately. Besides, what’s done is done. Why is he responding to it—especially in this way? He’s doing himself absolutely no favors, and adding oil to the flame. Even if he’s been dumb/selfish/insensitive/etc. with handling everything about his departure, I don’t wish ill on the man, and I don’t gain any pleasure watching a grown man get so rattled by words on the internet that he loses all his good sense. Fans might joke about leaving Downton being the biggest mistake of his life, and how he’ll end up a trainwreck with no career prospects in a few years time, but no one actually wants to see that shit unfold in real time… and I guess I don’t think he deserves that… Maybe he thinks he’s just being cheeky, but that is not how I see it at all. It’s telling me that it’s getting to him, and it’s gone beyond upsetting to supremely unsettling for me to see.
Before this week, I think I wanted him to say something, anything that would help me understand why he decided to leave. But now? Since I don’t think we will ever get a satisfactory answer, I’ve come to realize that maybe I don’t need to know anymore, not if it means continuing to watch this wreck. Sure, many fans would’ve been angry with Dan for leaving REGARDLESS of his reasons, regardless of how he handled it, but he HAS made things a thousand times worse for himself, and made it much harder for fans to “get over it” with the way he’s handled it, is continuing to handle it. I don’t personally think that everything he says has been unequivocally douchey and awful, but a lot of he’s said and done has been the absolute wrong thing, and has only served to lose him more and more fans. Please, just.make.him.stop. Where the eff is his PR team? Can we just turn back time for Dan, and have him hire a real team? Hell, hire me!
Actually, if we could turn back time (WE HAVE TO GO BACK KATE) and he had hired me, I would’ve tried my hardest to convince him to stay on the frickin show … but let’s say he made the decision in February and wouldn’t budge. I’ve been thinking about this more than I should admit… in what ways exactly, did he bungle this up, and ideally, how should he have conducted himself instead? I think it’s simple, take a cue from JBF. (Wait, don’t they have the same management company? Did Dan get the C/D team?) I understand it’s not quite the same, because Sybil wasn’t nearly as central to the plot as Matthew, and there was always going to be more fans making a fuss about Matthew’s death… but from a PR point of view, JBF handled her exit perfectly, quietly, graciously. LOL, I came up with a list of what to do (and not do) on your last season (/series) on the immensely popular show that made you:
